Rosacea is characterized by a "Hyper-Reactive" barrier. Traditional exfoliants like Glycolic Acid (AHA) or Salicylic Acid (BHA) can be too aggressive, causing the blood vessels to dilate and the skin to flush.
But if you have Rosacea, you still get dead skin cell buildup. So, how do you exfoliate without the "flare"?
The Science of PHA (Gluconolactone)
Polyhydroxy Acids (PHA) are often called the "Next Generation AHAs."
- The Difference: PHA molecules are significantly larger than AHA molecules.
- The Mechanism: Because they are so big, they cannot penetrate deep into the skin where the nerves and blood vessels live. They stay on the very surface, gently dissolving the bonds of dead skin cells.
The Secret Benefit: Humectant Properties
Unlike other acids that can be drying, PHAs are actually Humectants. They have multiple "hydroxyl groups" that attract water. This means while you are exfoliating, you are also Hydrating.

PHA and the "Glow"
Because PHA works so cleanly on the surface of the stratum corneum, it creates a very smooth "Reflective Index" (which we talked about in the Glass Skin Masterclass). For someone with Rosacea, this allows them to achieve a bright, radiant finish without the 30 minutes of redness that usually follows a "peel."
The Advice: If you have Rosacea, look for Gluconolactone or Lactobionic Acid in the ingredient list. Start with a PHA toner once every 3 days. It is the only acid "Logic" that respects a fragile barrier.
